We read “Ending Parkinson’s Disease” in 2022; it left us wanting more – more stories and more detail about why so many of us have Parkinson’s Disease and this country’s failure to take the steps needed to clean up our air, our water and our soil. Thanks to Dr. Dorsey and Dr. Okun who have dedicated their lives to making out environment safer. In telling the stories, this “must read” reminds one of science fiction. This book – filled with scary, sad, suspenseful stories of living on the edge for the sake of pretty grass and clothes that don’t shrink, unfortunately, does not stretch the truth. Written in a readable form, the book is structured to provide just enough of the stories to provoke a desire to make changes that will leave our grandchildren with a safer environment. It provides the plan we must follow!
This book taught me a lot about the origins of Parkinson’s disease. It actually could have been avoided had I only known many years ago. There is certainly hope for the future, but not in time for my family.
I grew up on a farm in western Nebraska. My first encounterwith pesticides was trying to save our crops from weeds and insects. We would hire crop dusters to treat the crops. My brother and I would position ourselves so that we would be hit by the spray as they flew over. I now have Parkinson's, but my brother does not. This phenomenon is one of the reasons this disease is so hard to pin down. Not everyone is affected in the same way. My brother is now 80, and I'm 79.What a great book. Very enlightening.
An extraordinary book written by extraordinary physicians. Dr. Okun and Dr. Dorsey bring the very best of the scientific method to the public, translating complex medical knowledge into clear, practical insights. They are not only brilliant clinicians and researchers, but also tireless advocates—true heroes on the front lines of the fight against Parkinson’s disease. What makes this work so powerful is that it goes beyond medicine. The authors have dedicated their careers to prevention, treatment, education, and research, but they also recognize that real progress requires change at the policy and societal level. Their commitment to shaping health policy, influencing systems, and driving global conversations ensures that their impact extends far beyond the clinic or laboratory. They are working for a future where Parkinson’s is not only treatable, but preventable and, ultimately, eliminated and eradicated. For patients and families, this book is both a lifeline and a beacon of hope. I learned more about Parkinson’s from these pages than I could have gathered in a lifetime of scattered research. The clarity, compassion, and depth of information make it an invaluable resource—not only for those living with Parkinson’s, but also for caregivers, loved ones, and anyone who wants to understand how to reduce their risk. The fight against Parkinson’s is often long, daunting, and uncertain. Yet reading this book reminds us that we are not alone: with leaders like Dr. Okun and Dr. Dorsey, there is genuine reason for hope. Their vision, dedication, and courage inspire all of us to take part in this urgent effort.
This book is not just for those living with Parkinson's. It is an eye opener. Everyone is at risk for Parkinson's and if it has not touched your family yet, it likely will in the future if things don't change. The authors cite the science that points to toxins that we are exposed to daily and address the needs of the growing population of people being diagnosed. The book made it clear that Parkinson's is a global, urgent, societal problem that can no longer be ignored.
