If you've ever streamed a show on HBO Max, seen a Formula One race, hummed a tune on SiriusXM, bought concert tickets via Ticketmaster, or watched an Atlanta Braves game, you've crossed paths with John Malone. You just didn't know it.

John Malone remains a stranger to most people, though millions have been touched by the technologies and content he made possible.

In Born to Be Wired, this legendary "cable cowboy" shares stories from behind the scenes of the most transformative deals in media, entertainment, and technology. He recounts the extraordinary saga of how America was wired--how a single copper strand evolved from a rural TV-antenna service into a high-speed backbone powering the internet and clearing the path for Amazon, Facebook, and Google.

Malone offers an insider's account of launching television's first cable networks--including Discovery, TBS, QVC, and BET--and the strategy behind era-defining mergers, from Warner Bros. Discovery to Live Nation Entertainment. His Liberty Media ventures, including Formula One, have delivered long-term returns often compared to Berkshire Hathaway.
More than a business story, this is a personal reflection--from a quiet kid with a mechanic's curiosity to a media visionary confronting the costs and consequences of disruption in an industry he helped reshape.
Trained at the storied Bell Labs and gifted with a mathematical mind, Malone saw patterns in complexity. Where others saw chaos, he saw systems--and reconfigured companies with the precision of an engineer, unlocking value no one else could see.
Sweeping, revealing, and deeply human, Born to Be Wired offers a rare glimpse into the logic--and the life--behind the screen.

Great Book Indeed.

A great read on many levels. Extremely well written. In each chapter there are moments in Malone's life that are illuminated in vivid detail where it reads like an epic novel or movie. Surprising - I did not expect to see the level of emotional impact this book would have on me. Malone describes his relationships with the people in his life who he pays tribute to for facilitating his own successes. There are so many really touching bits that humanize a guy who has been referred to as Darth Vader! It's kind of remarkable that I got a bit choked up reading a book about a business tycoon who happens to be a very likable and brilliant guy. The Business - If there is a master class on how to play the long game and the short game in business, it's within Born to be Wired. Literally, there are hundreds of little nuggets of wisdom Malone shares about his decision making, risk assessment strategies and pure gambles that might make going to business school seem like a waste of time. Just read this book instead. Scope - Malone didn't wake up rich and powerful. The story that unfolds about his upbringing, those who influenced him on things having nothing to do with business and everything to do with character and attitude, builds and builds where you realize that any of us could achieve our dreams if we could only develop the patience and grit that is needed to succeed at what ever it is we are after. Best of all, he tells his story with a humility that is rnot what we expect from the billionaire class. He's clearly a solid dude and I have been deeply inspired by his story. A great book to share with anyone on an entrepreneurial quest or a person who doesn't believe success is attainable in our hyper competitive culture. And really, a great book for anyone who wants to feel good about having tried to live an honest life and also become exceedingly successful. Malone seems to have threaded that needle. Great book indeed.

A Must Read

John Malone, among the lesser known and least understood among America's billionaires, is a literal witness to the birth of the internet and the digital age which has followed. He's made more billion-dollar deals than most Americans buy cars in their lifetimes. In this revelatory memoir, with a big assist from former Wall Street Journal writer, Mark Robichaux, Malone takes us inside the breakout moments that took us from the bad old days of AOL dial-up connections to the stringing of high-capacity cable which still forms the backbone of our present digital economy and existence. From the very beginning, Malone was in the thick of this. Malone is candid about his hits and misses. The sale of his company to A&T, while it brought untold riches at first, turned out to be a disastrous mismatch which cratered his personal wealth. Instead of quitting, Malone (who actually is a horseman) got back on his horse and put together deal after deal that has made him a bona fide American legend among the nation's business elite. What's fun and wildly interesting is Malone's telling of his friendships and rivalries with the likes of Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch and Barry Diller to name a few. Malone expresses a particular fondness for Turner and his audacious derring-do even though on paper Malone the introvert and political libertarian would seem to have nothing in common with the loud and liberal Turner who was once married to the uber progressive Jane Fonda. But Malone says he saw CNN founder Turner as a brilliant businessman who also fired Malone's serious interest in land conservation based on Turner's own extensive holdings and a clear love of wild places. As a result, the acquisitive Malone has used his wealth to stitch together 2.2 million acres, making him the second-largest land owner in the U.S. He says his aim is to preserve the vast majority of those holdings as forever-wild conservation lands. A startling aside: Malone reveals himself as a high-functioning autistic that has left him uneasy among crowds and big events but clearly has allowed him to concentrate on matters that required his business acumen. Malone and his wife, Leslie, have other philanthropic interests, including a Colorado shelter that rehabs abandoned horses and then finds matches for them with appropriate owners. Malone's enemies and frenemies in the business world often described him as Darth Vader ruthless but this book makes you think you wouldn't mind having lunch with John Malone to tap into his huge brain and maybe hear a yarn or two.

A Masterclass in Media, Strategy, and Storytelling

Born to Be Wired is a riveting deep dive into the mind and methods of John Malone—one of the most quietly influential figures in media, telecom, and strategic deal-making. From the evolution of cable to the rise of streaming, Malone’s fingerprints are everywhere, and this book offers a rare, firsthand look at how it all came together.
The storytelling is crisp, well-paced, and remarkably accessible given the complexity of the subject matter. It’s clear that Malone’s voice drives the narrative, but longtime Malone biographer Mark Robichaux—author of the excellent Cable Cowboy—lends a steady editorial hand that helps shape the arc and bring out the nuances in Malone's life and relationships. The result is a book that feels both personal and precise, rich with insight but never bogged down in jargon.
Whether you’re a student of business strategy, curious about the minds behind the modern entertainment landscape, or just looking for an enjoyable read, Born to Be Wired delivers. And if you want to trace the full arc of Malone’s impact, Cable Cowboy makes for a perfect companion
