A few nights before Halloween, as Cork O’Connor gloomily ruminates on his upcoming birthday, he receives a call from his son, Stephen, who is working for a nonprofit dedicated to securing freedom for unjustly incarcerated inmates. Stephen tells his father that decades ago, as the newly elected sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork was responsible for sending an Ojibwe man named Axel Boshey to prison for a brutal murder that Stephen is certain he did not commit.
Cork feels compelled to reinvestigate the crime, but that is easier said than done. Not only is it a closed case but Axel Boshey is, inexplicably, refusing to help. The deeper Cork digs, the clearer it becomes that there are those in Tamarack County who are willing once again to commit murder to keep him from finding the truth.
At the same time, Cork’s seven-year-old grandson has his own theory about the investigation: the Windigo, that mythic cannibal ogre, has come to Tamarack County…and it won’t leave until it has sated its hunger for human blood.

Slightly convoluted, but as always, a compulsive read. It's always a good story with a strong sense of place and familial connections. Justice prevails.
I'm a Cork O'Connor series fan and have read all the books, including this most recent, Apostle's Cove. I found the first half of the new book to be a bit slow moving. This focusing on Cork's involvement in murder investigation that occurred 25 years earlier that possibly resulted in the conviction of an innocent man. I was a little concerned as I read (or plowed) through that our author might have run out of gas in this latest volume. The pace picks up in the last half to a satisfying conclusion. Happy to have read it, and looking forward to more volumes, but would have preferred the first half of the book to have been a little more engaging.
I love the way Cork has grown in these stories by Mr. Krueger. This book with the chapters in the past when Cork was sheriff and the ones in the present day are wonderfully written and show so much of how Cork and his family have grown over the years. I can't wait for another Cork O'Connor mystery. Please Mr. Krueger, keep them coming.
This author never disappoints! Excellent read and the book was in excellent condition.
Love these characters and this series. The ending was foreshadowed but still a surprise. I highly recommend it to all.
