How a skeptical FBI agent reached out to a famous psychic for help on a baffling case – and the twenty-five-year crime-solving journey that followed
In the summer of 1998, FBI agent Bob Hilland reluctantly picked up the phone to call the famous psychic John Edward. Bob didn’t expect much from the call, but he was working on an unsolvable cold case and had nowhere else to turn.
What Bob never imagined was that the call would lead to a shattering of all his preconceived notions, a huge break in the cold case, and an unlikely crime-solving partnership that spanned twenty-five years.
As Bob and John took on more cases together, they slowly learned how to rely on each other and trust their skills, ultimately finding not only justice for the crimes they solved, but resolution and healing in their own lives.
Centering on the investigation of the gruesome John Smith murders that rocked the nation, Chasing Evil is a heart-stopping story of murder, justice, and finding help in unexpected places.

Incredible journeys, lessons and insights are all in this book. Reading the words from an incredibly gifted psychic and a dedicated FBI Agent opens so many doors to our expansive world, I found this book exciting, fascinating, just incredible. The team work was awesome to follow!! We all have so much to discover and learn from the investigations that are revealed in this story. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
My thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for allowing me to read an early digital ARC of this book by Retired FBI Agent Robert Hilland and psychic John Edward.A Surprising JourneyIf you've read many of my reviews, you know that I seldom read a synopsis before starting a book. I enjoy surprises, and the book blurb often reveals more than I'd like to know. Generally, I begin with an understanding of the genre, the title, and not much else. When I picked up Chasing Evil, I initially felt it had a slow start and wondered if it was the type of book I’d appreciate. However, as I continued reading, it quickly drew me in.A Captivating Cold CaseThe story unfolds in 1998, centering on Robert Hillard, an FBI agent who becomes engrossed in a cold case he is determined to solve. But after a dry spell, Hillard felt his resolve wasn't enough to advance the case. He needed help. He reluctantly agrees to meet with psychic John Edward. And at this point, he was willing to at least hear what Edward had to offer. However, it is clear that this act is one of desperation, given Hillard's skepticism.Dynamic DevelopmentsThe narrative doesn't solely focus on this single cold case. It also explores other cases in which Hillard becomes involved. Without delving too deeply into his relationship with John Edward, I can say that their friendship extends beyond the typical dynamic of a psychic and an FBI agent.Organizational ChallengesMy concerns with this fast-paced book stem from the feeling that better organization might have enhanced the reading experience. The transition from being focused on one case to others was jarring and disrupted the flow. Additionally, the beginning of the book could have been more engaging to hook readers sooner.Final ThoughtsAll in all, Chasing Evil is a book that will linger in my mind for some time to come. It provides much to ponder, regardless of whether you are a believer or a skeptic regarding psychics. This book offers an intriguing exploration of its themes and characters, leaving a lasting impression.
I caught a YouTube interview with Hilland and Edward and immediately bought the book for my kindle. I couldn’t put it down. It’s compelling, agonizing, fascinating—you will find yourself holding your breath at times, or perhaps give a fist pump and a triumphant shout. 20/10 would recommend.
The most brilliant book. What a read. I could not put it down. Well done to Bob and to the most incredible psychic medium, John! You guys have knocked this out of the park. I have to read it again and again!
A very interesting combination of metaphysics and true-crime, two of my favorite subjects. Bob Hilland is a straight-laced super agent, and John Edward is a spiritual teacher. Each brings their own special talent to this work.. It's riveting, alarming, and reads like fiction...which brings to mind the saying, "you can't make this stuff up." It's also a very satisfying read knowing many bad-guys got their due.
