Parenting today often feels like an uphill battle, with technology invading every corner of our kids’ lives. From the rise of social media addiction to the growing mental health crisis among children and teens, parents are grappling with how they can create a healthy, balanced relationship with technology for their kids.
Bestselling author Jean Twenge provides the much-needed playbook parents have been asking for. Drawing on her decades as a psychologist studying the impact of technology and mental health and her personal experience as the mother of three teenagers, Twenge offers ten actionable rules for raising independent and well-rounded children. From setting “No Social Media Until 16” boundaries to creating no-phone zones like bedrooms and family dinners, these rules are grounded in evidence yet simple enough to incorporate into any family routine.
Short, empowering, and timely, this book equips parents with the tools to combat not just immediate harms such as online bullying but also helps to nurture essential life skills, preparing kids and teens to become autonomous adults.

Fantastic content, practical suggestions. One thing I especially appreciated about this book is the lack of filler. I've read 3-4 parenting books in the past year, and many times I've come away from a chapter with a sense of, "that could have been said in half the amount of words." This book's author, on the other hand, concisely lays out her arguments. I felt like she respected my limited time :)
One note - the book is aimed at families with older kids. I have a toddler and a baby - it will take a while for the 10 rules to really apply to them. Still, I don't regret reading it now. Having the future in mind informs the decisions I'm making now.
Thank goodness for practical advice from Dr. Jean Twenge, a mom of three Gen Z kids and a researcher studying digital technology’s impact on young people. I’ve needed a resource like this since the school lockdowns. In 2020, I repeatedly called my daughter’s school and district, concerned about teachers requiring students to watch YouTube videos on school Chromebooks without limits on total screen time or non-school videos watched while claiming to be doing homework. The shift to online-only reading also diminished my daughter’s love for physical books. The school was pulling my child into excessive screen time without guardrails. Meanwhile, Discord, texting, and gaming became the acceptable ways to socialize during California’s lockdowns.
Dr. Twenge’s book provides succinct, actionable advice supported by real-world examples of parenting and resistance from the child/teen. I appreciate how she explains the scientific and experiential reasons for each rule or limit, while empowering parents to adapt them based on their values, child, and circumstances. Instead of floundering in a confusing, rapidly changing digital world, parents can use her suggested boundaries as a springboard for action. The book also deepened my understanding of social media risks, like social comparison and bad actors.
Within a few days of cracking open this book, I have been talking with my daughter, citing Twenge, and aiming for a healthier, more balanced use of screens...not just for her, since this book has also prompted me to reflect on my own digital engagement.
A timely book with very clear steps to help our children and teens foster healthy relationships with technology. I appreciate Dr. Twenge's acknowledgement of the barriers that are likely to come up as parents set boundaries with their kids and help in navigating those. Every parent should read this!
